Obituary of Dorothy Stewart

Dorothy W. Stewart, 99, Peacefully on February 21, 2017 at her home at Kingsway Village. Born in Albany on October 6, 1917 to the late George Wacksman and Sarah Adams Wacksman, the family moved to Colonie when Dorothy was in the second grade, and she graduated from Roessleville High School in 1935. Her classmates chose her as the most courteous, prettiest and best dressed member of the class. After graduation, Dorothy attended Mildred Elley Secretarial School. She worked for 11 years in the insurance industry until she met and married Schuyler J. Stewart. They were married at the First Reformed Church of Scotia on September 27, 1947 and were happily married 63 years, sharing a home together at 20 Jennifer Rd. in Glenville. At their home, she created beautiful gardens and was happiest out in the yard tending to her plants. Dorothy had many interests and hobbies. She enjoyed playing golf and was active in the Mohawk Golf Club's Member Guest Tournament. She played golf at the club until she was 93 years old. She was active in her church community at the First Reformed Church of Scotia where she was a member of the Dorcas Society and Kids USA with her partner Yvonne Orsini. She participated on a regular basis at the church's annual Dutch Fair well into her 90's. She was a faithful donor to the Schenectady Food Bank and to the City Mission. Her example taught her children how to be generous. She also volunteered for many years at Ellis Hospital, helping patients and families alike by answering the switchboard. She also helped seniors use the lifeline health security device by visiting them in their homes. She is survived by her three children: Schuyler J. Stewart, Jr. of Ipswich, MA, Cynthia Palladino (John) of Newburyport, MA and Sally Fellows (James) of St. Augustine FL; four grandchildren- Sara Dranetz (Andrew), Amy Heffernan (Thomas), Rebecca Buslovich (Christopher) and Samuel Fellows (Katherine) and six great grandchildren. She is also survived by her nieces Susan Caird and the Smith Family.
