Obituary of Joseph Preston

Mr. Joseph D. Preston, 72, died peacefully at his home on February 7, 2013 with his family by his bedside. Born in Bronx, NY he was the son of the late Joseph B. and Sarah Torkington Preston. The family moved to the Schenectady area when Joe was a child. Joseph served with the U.S. Army Corps from 1958-61 then as a reservist until 1964. He was married on October 29, 1961 to the former Patricia Bascom, whom he met at the former F.W. Woolworth Store in downtown Schenectady. Mr. Preston was a professional fire fighter with S.F.D. for 31 years retiring in 1996. He was a member of union local 28. Joe and Pat have been residents of Scotia-Glenville for the past 27 years. Throughout his life he enjoyed his family first and foremost, outdoor activities and was an avid hunter and fisherman. An exciting hobby was to go casino gaming with Pat at various areas in the United States. Survivors include his beloved wife of 51 years, Patricia Preston, two daughters, Darlene Preston and Terri Sumrall and her husband David, of Schenectady. Joe is survived also by his sister Joann Vergine and her husband Peter. A Memorial service is planned for Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at 11 am at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd. Scotia-Glenville. Calling hours will be held Monday, February 11th from 5 PM to 7 PM at the funeral home. Entombment will follow committal services on Tuesday at 1 PM at the Gerald B.H. Solomon National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union St. Schenectady, NY 12308.
