Obituary of George E. Prentice


George E. Prentice, 80, of Eagle Pine Way, Rochester, died on June 25, 2017 at Monroe Community Hospital after a brief illness. Born October 3, 1936 in Gloversville, NY, he was the son of the late Francis and Leila (Guinup) Prentice. George was a Gloversville High School alumni as well as receiving his AAS degree from S.C.C.C. He served in the Air Force as Airman 1st Class from '54-'57, then as a reservist until 1964. He married the former Norma Jean Covert on October 3, 1964. George worked for the NYS Thruway Authority for 36 years, retiring as Director of Toll Collection in 1994. He examined feasibility studies of Easy Pass (EZ PASS) and helped contribute to the development of the electronic toll collection. As a young man he played trombone in area bands. He played bugle with the Twelve Air Force Drum and Bugle Corp in Ramstien, Germany. George enjoyed music his entire life. He belonged to the Beukendahl Chapter # 915 F&AM and was past master. George was also past high priest of Catskill Chapter # 285 , a member of St. George's # 175, Royal Arch Masons. He was a Masonic past district deputy. In 2007 Mr. Prentice became Illustrias master for St. George's Council of Cryptic Masons; Commandry of Knights Templar #37; Schenectady Shrine Club and Cypress Temple. George was a member of KAA-RHEU-VAHN GROTTO; Red Cross of Constantine, Albany, NY and Sampson Air Force Base Veteran's Association. His wife Norma Jean passed away on September 18, 2006. He is predeceased also by his brother Roger Prentice. George had an affinity for gardening and was an all around handyman at his home. He moved to Rochester several years ago from his home on Marilyn Drive in Glenville. Survivors include two daughters, Jerilyn 'Jerri' Fairman (husband James) of Watertown, NY and Jacquelyn (husband Michael) Fagan of Milton, VT.; his fiance, Barbara Easterly of Rochester. He leaves behind his grandchildren: Carolynne and Michalyn Fagan; a brother, Grant Prentice of Gloversville and sister, Eleanor Weeks of Blountville, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held Wednesday, June 28 at 1PM in the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd. Scotia-Glenville NY (518 399-1630). Calling hours will precede the service at the funeral home from 11 AM -12:45 PM whereupon a Masonic Service will be held. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS are preferred to Jefferson Community College Foundation, Watertown, NY 13601 or to Royal Arch Masonic Charities in his name. Burial will be on Friday (June 30) at 9:30am at the Solomon National Veteran’s Cemetery in Schuylerville, New York. Air Force military honors will be bestowed.
