David Allen

Obituary of David Kyle Allen

David Kyle Allen of Scotia, NY passed away on October 3 after a lifelong battle with kidney disease and more recently a fight with cancer.

Dave was born in Schenectady, NY on September 30, 1975 to Richard and Elizabeth Allen.  A resident of Scotia for his entire life, he attended Scotia-Glenville schools and despite his ongoing challenges since childhood with his kidney disease, Dave graduated with his class in 1993.  He obtained his BA degree in Business from the College of Saint Rose in 1997 and began a career with Empire Blue Cross/Blue Shield, working on the Child Health Plus Insurance Program in 1998 until his declining health in 2006.

As a child, Dave spent much of his time with his family in Vermont on the shores of Lake Champlain.  He loved fishing, swimming and bonfires at the Norton family camp with family and friends.  Vermont was truly Dave’s second home and he passed these traditions on to his own children.

Dave met the love of his life, Catherine Wiggand in 2000 and the two married on October 18, 2003.  Together, they began raising their family in Dave’s beloved hometown of Scotia.  Dave was a devoted father and participated fully in the boys’ activities. His boys were his true joy. He volunteered his time at cub scouts, little league, Tartan Football, Travel and CYO Basketball,  and S-G PTA.  If there was a game to be played by one of his boys, Dave was there to coach or just cheer them on.  Dave taught his sons the meaning of good sportsmanship and to have compassion and generosity to others. He spent many hours watching his favorite professional sports teams, the New York Giants, the New Jersey Devils and the Boston Red Sox with his family.  He even reluctantly watched the New York Yankees with his wife and sons when he had to.

Dave never let his illness keep him down.  He always looked at the bright side of things.  He fought every medical complication with true valor and his infectious sense of humor lifted his family’s spirits even during the darkest times.  His many doctors and nurses and other medical professionals that worked with Dave over the years were in awe of his inspiring attitude and zest for life.

In addition to his wife and parents, Dave is survived by his sons, Jonathan and Ryan of Scotia, sister Karen Allen, her partner Fred Buthe, and his niece Bethany Rose of Duanesburg, and his father and mother in-law, Walter and Darlene Wiggand of Rotterdam.  He also leaves his extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins.   He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Glenn and Theresa Norton of Essex Junction, Vermont and his paternal grandparents, Dwight and Lillian Allen of Burlington, Vermont.

Dave’s family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, as well as Albany Medical Center and Ellis Hospital for the compassionate care he has received over the years. His family also thanks Dave’s Army and the entire community of Scotia-Glenville for their unwavering love and support of Dave and his family throughout his illness.  Family and Friends are invited to visitation on Friday, October 13, at the Glenville Funeral home, 9 Glenridge Road, Scotia-Glenville, from 4 pm to 7 pm.   A celebration of Dave’s life will be held on Saturday, October 14 at 11:00  AM at the funeral home.
