Tom was a very good friend and I will miss my conversations with him. Often he told me about his little students at Stevens Elementary school. He volunteered to teach them about poetry and chose poems that he read to them. I particularly remember poems about him that the students wrote and illustrated. For many years he was a sculptor, but he always remained an educator.
My sincere condolence to the whole family.

Dear Ruth and family,
I was so sorry to hear about Tom (but also surprised to realize that he was 93, since he had the spry posture of a much younger man, and the commitment to social justice of an even younger man. Tom (then, known as Mr. Schottman) is the only person I remember from Junior High School, even then, known by students as a genuinely fair person. So it was an honor, years ago, to have dinner at a Turkish restaurant in NYC when he came for a museum visit...and my husband and I are proud owners of a Tom Schottman sculpture, which has a prime place in our living room. What a wonderful father and grandfather, artist, friend, and citizen. THis is a loss to us all.
Linda (Helen and Frank Steiner's daughter)

Tom Schottman was such a bright light. What a talented, kind, and loving man. His obituary alone demonstrates how full his life was, as well as how many lives he touched throughout his lifetime.
He will be missed very much.

What a loss to our sculpture community. Tom was such a dear soul and so helpful to me. It took me under his wing in many ways but one important way, he taught me to fire the big gas kiln with no automatic controls, just seeing the flame and listening to the sound of the gas jets. We even once went up on the roof and covered the chimney with a large paving stone to create a draft because it was so cold out. A priceless experience.
93 is a good long life and he is probably in the upper world creating abstract angels for the folks who dwell up there.
Dear dear man!!!
My condolences to Ruth, Elly and the whole family.

Tom was simply the best man I ever knew. No one embraced life, family and art the way Tom did. He loved it all. It is impossible to measure his impact on me, my work, and my teaching. He was a mentor in the best possible way, side by side. Our hands were in clay in the studio at Skidmore for 22 years. I was able to watch his work evolve and change first hand. I had the good fortune to be able to learn his techniques as he demonstrated his love of the medium on a daily basis.
How we all will miss his marvelous attitude and his wonderful generosity to us all. I hope he knew how much we all loved him.

So sad to lose Tom, a most admirable man, and the creator of beauty - a beautiful family, and beautiful art. We are fortunate to have five examples of the latter in my garden, and to have met so many of his family. Our thoughts are particularly with Ruth, our friend and my teacher about so much in nature. Her passion for plants and their place in the web of life has greatly informed my own journey in that direction, as well as introducing me to Tom. I will always be grateful to both of them for all they have given to their community. Jeff and Judy Leon

As a 4th grade teacher at Stevens Elementary for many years, I had the pleasure of seeing and chatting with Tom many, many times. He was such a kind soul and his willingness to offer his time to so many students over the many years amazed me. As a former art major, I also thoroughly enjoyed talking to Tom about art, his work and the artistic process. He would often stop by to share news of local galleries or leave a note in my mailbox about artist's openings in our area. He was simply such an interesting, kind, generous man. The diversity of his life's experiences added so much to who he was as a person and I know the BHBL school district, and Stevens School, will miss him. My sincere condolences to his family.

I am especially saddened today to hear of the death of Thomas Schottman.
Our relationship spans decades. We have been friends & fellow artists both seeking to create the “unknown beings”. As Thom quotes Raymond Duchamp-Villon, 1909- "The sole purpose of the artist is neither descriptive nor imitation but the creation of unknown beings from elements which are always present but not apparent.". I have always shared this same philosophy & the same working mythology. My time with Tom is remembered by me as time that was very productive, precious & joyful.
Over the many years Tom was a true & caring friend. We were always able to be find a special connection through our love of art, the importance of teaching & the willingness to help younger artists.
My interaction with Tom, on so many levels, has always been a joy of sharing both him to me & me to him. Looking back, I feel I always got the better of the deal.
I will sincerely miss him in my life. There is a large void in my heart as a result of his passing. He was an inspiration to so many of us and he has left a great legacy for us all to remember.
I wish my sincere condolences to his family, his wife, Ruth Schottman; children, Elly, Ann, Timothy, Wendy and Kate.
