Obituary of Gilbert R. Smith
Gilbert "Gil" R. Smith, 86, formerly of Charlton, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2017 at Baptist Health Center. Born on November 14, 1931 in Kingston, New York, he was the son of the late Nelson and Violet Smith. Gil married his beloved wife, Carolyn "Carol", on February 14, 1953. A 1948 graduate of Kingston High School, Gil was later able to attend Alfred University and Union College. Gil worked for GE for 43 years retiring from K.A.P.L., Niskayuna, in 1994 as a water coolant corrosion technician. He was also a member of the GE Quarter Century Club. After retirement he worked for B&D Automotive in Clifton Park until 2003. His love of Boy Scouts started in Kingston with Troop 12 Drum Corps and continued throughout adulthood as Scout Master of Troop 54, Charlton. Gil was a long-time member of the Racing City Chorus enjoying shows and competitions. An avid outdoorsman, Gil, enjoyed hunting, camping, hiking the Adirondacks and Catskills, ice fishing, and picking apples at the orchard. A patriotic man, Gil proudly served in the New York Army National Guard. He never missed an opportunity to salute the C-130's from the 109th as they flew overhead or thank every veteran that he met. He was a proud "Blue Star" dad and grandfather.
Gil is survived by his beloved wife Carol, his daughter Jeanne (Jonathan) Teetz, as well as his son and daughter-in-law. He is also survived by his grandchildren Jessica (Jeremy) Effler, Erin (Matt) Gowin, Jake (Erica) Smith, Sarah Smith, and Shane Smith. Gil was also blessed with 13 great-grand children, loving extended family, and many dear friends.
Calling hours for Gil will be held on Thursday December 28, 2017 from 3 to 7pm at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road. Funeral services will follow at 7pm at the funeral home with Rev. Holly Nye officiating. Burial will take place privately at the convenience of the family.
