Obituary of Shirley A. Barnes
Shirley Manning Barnes, 85, passed away peacefully after a long battle with Alzheimer’s on June 3, 2018 at Schuyler Ridge Nursing Home. Born on August 24, 1932 in Springfield, MA, she was the daughter of the late Alan and Arline Manning. Shirley grew up in Schenectady and was a graduate of Nott Terrace High School. She went on to continue her education at Springfield College, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in medical technology. Shirley retired after many years from the Bender Lab Group in Albany as a medical technologist. After retirement, she spent many hours volunteering at Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital in Schenectady. She was a long-time communicant of the Union Presbyterian Church in Schenectady. Shirley enjoyed the outdoors, often hiking, cross country skiing and water skiing. Above all she loved spending time with her family.
Shirley is survived by her beloved children Laura (Mike) Hartman, Ellyson Barnes, Ken (Kris) Barnes and Diana (Marcello) Bianco. She is the cherished Nana to Lisa Hartman, Thomas Hartman, Addyson Barnes, Marco Bianco, Nicolino Bianco, Gianna Bianco and Ethyn Barnes. She is also survived by her long-time companion Steve Mintz, her brother Robert (Jan) Manning and several nieces and nephews.
Shirley is predeceased by her former husband and father of her children, Stanley Barnes.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 17, 2018 from 11am to 1pm at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, Glenville.
