Obituary of Thomas F. Winkler
Thomas F. Winkler, 74, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2018, at Ellis Hospital with family at his side following a long illness. Born in Saratoga Springs, he was the son of the late Frederick H. and Margaret (Quilty) Winkler. He was a 1962 graduate of Scotia-Glenville High School and went on to attend HVCC until he was asked by his country to proudly serve as a member of the U.S. Army from 1965-1967. As a helicopter mechanic crew chief, Tom was awarded The Air Medal for Heroism while participating in aerial flight in the Republic of Vietnam. Tom married his beloved wife Dawn (Walsh) Winkler on September 16, 1967, at St. Clare’s Church in Colonie. He retired in 1995 after 28 years as a field engineer for the General Electric Computer Division that eventually became Honeywell and Honeywell/Bull. Following retirement, Tom went on to obtain an associate degree in Accounting from SCCC. He enjoyed golfing, bowling and vacationing at the ocean on North Topsail Beach, NC. Tom was also a faithful member of the Knights of St. John, Commandery #100 for over 50 years. He was active as an usher and volunteer, as well as a communicant, of St. Joseph’s Church in Schenectady. Above all, Tom loved his family dearly, especially his cherished granddaughters.
In addition to his wife Dawn, Tom is survived by his sons Thomas J. Winkler and Gregory M. (Annie) Winkler. Granddaughters Lily and Jane Winkler also survive. Additionally, his brother Gerald (Yvette) Winkler, sister Nancy Maxwell, uncle Paul Eichman, aunt Myrna Quilty and several nephews. He was predeceased by his canine companion Jingles.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday July 10, 2018, from 4-7 p.m. at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, Glenville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 225 Lafayette St., Schenectady. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Schenectady.
