Obituary of Ruth Fiedler
Ruth I. Ciesielski Fiedler, age 92, passed away on Saturday, July 14, 2018 after a quiet and courageous challenge with many diseases.
Born on March 6, 1926 in Detroit, MI, she was the first of four children born to John A. and Helen (Krajnik) Ciesielski. Her father died of pneumonia when she was just 5 years old, so Ruth had to grow up quickly; by about age 10, she was taking care of her younger sisters while her mother went out to work.
After graduating in 1944 from Northeastern High School in Detroit, Ruth took a job with the Corp of Engineers, ordering repair parts for war supplies needed during WWII. When the war ended, she went to work in the auditing/accounting department of Brigg’s Manufacturing, which made bathroom fixtures.
Ruth met the love of her life, Harold J. Fiedler, at a New Year’s Eve party for the year 1947; they were married on August 20, 1949 at St. Hyacinth Church in Detroit by Bishop Rev. Stephen Woznicki, while Harold was still going to college on the GI bill.
Upon graduation, Harold accepted a job at General Electric, requiring the couple to move from their hometown of Detroit to the vicinity of Schenectady, where they lived and raised their family and stayed for the rest of their lives.
Ruth took her role as a mother very seriously, and devoted herself to lovingly caring for her children and their home. She taught them everyday real-life skills, as well as about God and faith, integrity, responsibility, sharing the load, accountability, hard work and doing your best, balancing work and play; appreciating what you had, sharing with and caring for others, and expressing gratitude.
She encouraged her children in their passions, happily celebrated birthdays and holidays, and enjoyed time spent with family, from picnics to trips to visit relatives and grandchildren. She loved to read, and had a great mind for history as well as current events. She especially enjoyed traveling the United States and parts of Europe together with Harold during his retirement. She was also devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary, praying the rosary daily, especially in her later years.
Ruth is survived by her brother-in-law, Allen Thomas Comons (husband of her sister, Lucille Josephine Ciesielski); her three children, Charles S. Fiedler, Susan A. (James M.) Gobat, and James B. (Cynthia A. DeFusco) Fiedler, and three grandchildren: Victoria M. Gobat, Gregory S. Gobat and Peter A. Gobat.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Ralph John Ciesielski, her sisters, Lucille Josephine Ciesielski and Doris Frances Ciesielski, and her beloved husband, Harold J. Fiedler, who died on May 29, 2003, following 54 years of marriage.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am on Friday, July 20th at Immaculate Conception Church, 400 Saratoga Rd. (Rte.50) with Rev. Jerome R. Gingras officiating. Interment will follow in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery. The Fiedler family will greet friends Thursday (July 19) from 6-8PM at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd. Scotia-Glenville. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, contributions may be made in Ruth’s name to the Central Association of the Miraculous Medal, 475 E. Chelten Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19144.
