Obituary of Albert “Al” Joseph Smith

Albert “Al” Joseph Smith, 76, passed away suddenly on November 2, 2018 at Albany Medical Center. Born in Manhattan, he was the son of the late Albert and Winifred Scanlan Smith. Al was raised in the Bronx and attended DeWitt Clinton High School. He went on to obtain his bachelor’s degree and was very proud of his career in the then-emerging technology field.  Al proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1962 to 1965 and was very passionate about our country and our freedoms. Al married his beloved wife Theodora “Teddi” Gapinski Smith in 1964.  Al was President of the Charlton Fire Department, President of the Glenville Fish and Game Club, member of the Charlton Republican Committee, Upstate Conservative Coalition, and Chairman of the Charlton Zoning Board of Appeals. An avid outdoorsman, Al enjoyed hunting, fishing and discovering new trails in the Adirondacks. Above all, he loved his wife, children and grandchildren, beyond words.

Survivors in addition to his wife Teddi, include their children Sondra (Jim) Smith, Joe (Samantha) Smith and Jean (Kevin) Dishinger. He was the proud grandfather to Cora Smith, Joey Smith, Jeremy Smith, Jacob Williams and Mason Williams.  Also surviving are Al’s siblings Thomas (Pat) Smith, Edward (Claire) Smith, Catherine (John) Hamilton, Peggy (Jim) Hamilton, Frances Lewis, Edna (Ron) Ventarola and Patti Heffernan and many, many nieces, nephews and friends.

Calling hours for Al will be held on Saturday November 10, 2018 from 2-6pm at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road Glenville. On Sunday November 11, a celebration of Al’s life will be held at the Charlton Fire Department, 786 Charlton Road, Charlton at a time to be announced. On Monday November 12, Al will be laid to rest with military honors at 9am at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road Schuylerville, NY.
