Obituary of Gunnar E. Walmet

Gunnar E. Walmet, 77, of Rexford hamlet, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2021 due to complications of Parkinson's disease. 

 

Born in Tartu, Estonia on June 3, 1944 he emigrated to the United States as a young boy. Gunnar was schooled in the U.S.A. and received two bachelor's degrees and a master's in Mechanical Engineering.  Early in his career Mr. Walmet was employed by G.E. 's R and D Center in Niskayuna. Subsequently he worked for NYS Energy Authority until retiring in 2009.  

 

He married the former Linda Kahn on January 28, 1967. The couple lived the first part of their lives in old Niskayuna then moved to Rexford where they have resided over 40 years. 

 

Gunnar loved to grow vegetables in his garden. He played tennis as a young man, and then turned to golf.  He loved nothing more than playing with family and friends at the Edison Club.   Gunnar was also fond of all animals, especially dogs. If you knew Gunnar, you loved him.  He was a true family man and friend. 

He was predeceased by his parents, Rudolph and Karin Walmet.

Survivors include his beloved wife  of 54 years, Linda Walmet; their son, Eric R. Walmet (Paula), their children Rachel and Luke, and a daughter, Stephanie Walmet. Gunnar leaves behind his dear in-laws, Barbara and Jack Rutt; a niece, Susan (Michael) Bonito and nephew Michael Rutt. 

Private services will be held at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford, CT. 

Memorials may be made in Gunnar's name to the Salvation Army or to any local animal  rescue shelter.

Gunnar always appreciated the acts of kindness received by his family upon entering this great country (volunteers of Salvation Army).
