Obituary of Alfred A. Lotano

Alfred A. Lotano, 83, passed peacefully surrounded by family on March 13, 2022. Born in Schenectady, NY to his late parents, Vincent and Michelina (Pizzo) Lotano. Growing up in a first generation Italian-American household, Al and his 3 brothers learned to speak Italian fluently. 

A 1957 Mont Pleasant High School graduate, he continued his education at Albany College of Pharmacy to follow in his father’s footsteps becoming a Pharmacist. After graduation, Al honorably served two years in the United States Army. 

Alfred worked for a few pharmacies in Schenectady before Joseph’s Pharmacy on Albany Street in Schenectady. Al was a trusted and knowledgable pharmacist, who went out of his way to care for his customers. He bought Joseph’s Pharmacy with his brother, Carmine, and for the next 34 years they grew their business until it was time to retire. As a pharmacist, boss, and a genuine person, Al was looked up too as a mentor and a father figure. After retirement, Alfred went back to work for several years at CVS at the Eastern Parkway location. 

His most important achievement was his family. His wife of 36 years, Theresa, and him created a blended family of 5 children connected by love. They enjoyed traveling together, across the United States and throughout Europe, as well as many trips to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware with the rest of the family. 

As an active member in his community, Al was apart of various organizations including, Schenectady Pharmaceutical Society, Reppers Club and was affiliated with his alma mater, Albany College of Pharmacy. He was a longtime member of St. Luke’s Church and St. John the Baptist Church, where he served as a Eucharist Minister and Pastor Council. Al also volunteered for Schenectady Inner City Ministry (SICM) and the former St. Clare’s Hospital.

In his spare time, he found joy reading, being well versed in trivia, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors while he worked in his flower and vegetable gardens. His loved ones will remember Alfred’s positive attitude and his patience for always having time for people. 

The family thanks Dr. Morgan, Dr. Chen, and Dr. Brose for their compassionate care to Alfred over the past years.

To continue his memory is wife, Theresa Lotano; children, Marymichelle Lotano, Dr. Vincent (Dr. Ramya) Lotano, Christopher (Amy) Kranick, Brian (Dr. Sarah) Kranick, and Julie (Joseph) Sullivan; cherished grandchildren, Ethan Kranick, Elena Lotano, Riley Kranick, Michael Lotano, Fiona Sullivan, Conor Sullivan, Angelo Southard, Kiernan Sullivan, Mary Margaret Kranick, Declan Sullivan, Josephine Kranick, and Caroline Kranick; brother, James (Dolores) Lotano and Dr. Remo Lotano. 

Calling hours will be held at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd. on Wednesday, March 16th 5 to 7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 17th, 9:30 AM at St. Luke’s Church in Schenectady. Procession to Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery will follow Mass for full military honors.
