Obituary of William John Montgomery

William John Montgomery, 76, passed away peacefully at his home in Glenville, N.Y. on July 28, 2022 after a four-month illness with melanoma. 

Son of the late William J. Sr. and Edythe Montgomery, Bill was born in Manhattan, N.Y. on July 10, 1946 and raised in Wantaugh, N.Y. He graduated from General Douglas McArthur High School in 1964 and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with bachelor's degrees in biology (1968) and chemistry (1976). He was a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity.

Bill served in the U.S. Army as Spec. 5 and was stationed in Korea during the Vietnam War era. He worked at Schenectady Chemicals, later SI Group, for 35 years as an environmental chemist, where he met his wife, the former Susan Lang; Bill retired in 2009.

Bill enjoyed hiking in the Adirondacks and family reunions on Great Sacandaga Lake. He was an avid ice hockey fan and followed RPI and the New York Rangers as well as the New York Yankees. A talented musician, Bill played flute, 12-string guitar and the hammered dulcimer. He played recreational ice hockey with the Capital District Hockey Association and Old Timers Hockey. He enjoyed collecting stamps with his father, he played chess and loved solving number puzzles.

A loving and devoted husband, father, son, brother and friend, Bill is survived by his wife of 38 years, Susan Lang Montgomery, his son William and daughter Elizabeth, brothers Paul (Nancy) and Phil (Simone) Montgomery, sister Laura (Doug) Wilkins and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Robert. 

Calling hours at Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd. will be held on Tuesday, August 2nd from 5 to 7 PM. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 AM on Wednesday, August 3rd, at the Glenville Funeral Home. Services will be live streamed on Glenville Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial at Broadalbin-Mayfield Rural Cemetery will be private.
