Douglass Ludwig

Obituary of Douglass C. Ludwig

Douglass C. Ludwig, 77, of Clifton Park, died suddenly on November 7th 2022 at Albany Medical Center.

Doug was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the son of the late Charles Henry Ludwig and Sophia B. Ludwig. Doug was a graduate of Catonsville High School.  He proudly served with the U.S. Navy for 4 years where he graduated from Machinist Mate “A” school and from Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Class C school. Upon honorable discharge, he began work at the National Smithsonian in Washington D.C. for four years.  He then transferred to the U.S. Capitol Powerplant in D.C. until retiring in 2000.

At a time when most people would embrace an empty nest, Doug and Joan welcomed over 53 foster babies into their loving home through Bethany Christian Services.  When Zoë was born, He and Joan decided they wanted to watch their granddaughter grow up, and uprooted from Maryland to move to Clifton Park, NY. During his retirement years, Doug drove a school bus first in Lothian Maryland, and then for the Shenendehowa School District.

Doug was very active in the American Legion Mohawk Post 1450.  He valued the comradery and service that the Legion provided to not only the community but to our country.  Each month he would serve faithfully at the Faith Baptist Food Bank. If there was a job to be done, whether little or big, Doug was there to provide help and support.  Doug could always be counted on to provide humble love and service. Doug loved being in the woods, whether hunting, fishing, canoeing, or camping.

He loved to travel, especially to the ocean.  He treasured his trips to Ocean City, Maryland with his wife of almost 53 years. Maryland cuisine held a special place in his heart whether it be Maryland's famous crabcakes, steamed crab, crab soup, grouper stuffed with crab, or basically anything with Maryland Blue crab!  He was an avid and loyal Orioles and Ravens fan!

Doug accepted Jesus as his savior early in his adult life. He was fortunate to grow stronger in his faith over the years and strengthen his relationship with God. He loved God, his family, and his country. He served them all faithfully to the end of his days. His loved ones have no doubt that he will be spending eternity with his savior.

He is survived by his wife of almost 53 years, Joan Ludwig, his daughter Kimberly Prettyman and husband Steve, his daughter Karen Beth Ludwig, his granddaughter Zoë Prettyman and his Grandpuppy Allie.
