Reverend Paul Mills

Obituary of Reverend Paul D. Mills

Reverend Paul D. Mills, 90, a loving and selfless man, was called to his heavenly home on May 10, 2023. Paul’s life was a testament to his unwavering faith, devotion to his family, and commitment to his community.

Born on May 20, 1932, in Port Byron, New York, to his late parents, David L. and Anna (Harris) Mills. A 1950 graduate of Port Byron High School, he furthered his education at Oswego College, graduating in 1960. In 1964, he answered the call to ministry, graduating from Wesley Theological Seminary.

Before embarking on his journey as a minister, Paul worked on his family farm until 1956. On April 21, 1956, he married the love of his life, Maxene Gordon, and together they built a life filled with love and service. It was a privilege for Paul to serve as pastor of many churches during his 40-plus years of ministry; 10 extraordinary years at Camden United Methodist Church and 50 years of summer services at the Sylvan Beach Chapel were highlights of his career! The hundreds of friends gathered along the way created a precious scrapbook of wonderful memories.

Paul's commitment to his community extended beyond his ministry. He was a devoted Rotarian for over 50 years, where he was honored with the prestigious Paul Harris Award. He served on the Board of Ordained Ministry and was the President of the Chamber of Commerce in Potsdam. Pastor Paul enthusiastically

took leadership roles in supporting the Salvation Army’s annual fundraising drive. He would often jump in and take a shift of ringing the bell when needed! Another passion for Pastor Paul was donating blood for the American Red Cross. At age 65, he joyfully reached a milestone…completion of 100 pints of blood. It was a win/win each time. Others received the gift of his healthy blood, and he received fig newtons and orange juice! Paul’s selflessness and dedication to others made him a pillar of every community in which he lived.

In his spare time, Paul enjoyed couponing, gardening, watching sports, and attending baseball games. A true classical music enthusiast, Paul's love for melody brought joy to those around him, especially in church. He took pride in his home, working tirelessly to create a loving and welcoming environment for his family and friends, including his unique collection of over 100 cow figurines.

Paul is survived by his loving wife, Maxene G. Mills; children, Sally Mills (John Ottaviani), Allen Mills (Emily), Keith Mills (Kellie); son-in-law, Scott Hoffman; sister, Esther E. Williams (Ronald); grandchildren, Kelsey Johnson (Brandon), Evan Hoffman, and Claire Mills; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Reyes, and Vincenzo Tearno. He is predeceased by his loving daughter, Margo Hoffman; as well as his brothers, Bruce Mills (Janet) and Earl Mills (Gloria). Paul's legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of all who were blessed to know him.

A calling period will be held at Shenendehowa United Methodist Church, 971 NY-146, Clifton Park, on Thursday, May 18th, from 2 to 3 PM. Funeral Service will immediately follow at 3 PM. Paul will be laid to rest on Friday, May 19th at 1 PM at his family’s plot in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Port Byron NY.
