Obituary of William Rohling
William W. Rohling, 83, passed away peacefully on Thursday August 14, 2014 with his family by his side.
William was born in Amsterdam, NY on September 14, 1930, the son of the late Wenzel and Minnie Rohling. William was a graduate of Wilbur Lynch High School and went on to further his education through multiple General Electric programs. He married his beloved wife the late Jean (Hausmann) Rohling at the 2nd Presbyterian Church in Amsterdam on July 6, 1952. William and his wife moved to Glenville in 1960, where they raised their family. He retired from General Electric as an Micro Electronic Specialist. William loved to learn and take what he learned to teach his family. William enjoyed learning about and collecting helicopters, trains, electronics but especially WWI and WWII artifacts. His prized collection of WWI and WWII books reached over 3,000. Whether he was sailing on Galway Lake, vacationing in Gulfport, FL or on a cruise with his wife, or teaching his grandchildren how to fish, William loved to be outdoors. Though while he wasn't outdoors, you could find him planning his next prank to pull or grabbing a bite at his favorite restaurant Cappie's Drive-In in Amsterdam.
William was predeceased by his wife Jean Rohling; brother Raymond Rohling and sister Caroline Smith. Surviors include a son, Kenneth Rohling; daughters, Karen (James) Gillespie, Susan (Paul) Gillespie; and beloved daughter-in-law, Renee Rohling. His cherished grandchildren, James and Jason Gillespie, Jennifer and Evan Rohling, Iain and Kaylee Gillespie. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral service will be at 7 pm on Saturday, August 16, at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road. A calling hour, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited, will begin at 6 p.m. prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Edison Tech Center, P.O. Box 1417 Schenectady, NY 12301-1417 .
