Obituary of Charles Meyer

Albuquerque, New Mexico LCDR Charles H. Meyer, SC USN (Ret.) 57, formerly of Keyser, WV, Washington DC, and Glenville, NY passed away peacefully at his home in Albuquerque on October 13, 2014. Charlie was born on March 21, 1957 in Schenectady, the son of Charles J. and Nellie M. (Ross) Meyer. He attended BH-BL Central Schools. Charlie joined the U.S. Navy and began his service as a submariner. While stationed in Hawaii, he earned his bachelor's degree and was accepted to Officer Candidate School where he earned his commission as an Ensign in the Supply Corps, rising to the rank of Lieutenant before his separation after 16 years on active duty. Charlie served on the USS Jack, USS Thomas Hart and the USS Wasp.Upon leaving active duty he relocated to Washington DC, continuing his service in the US Naval Reserve, eventually retiring as a Lieutenant Commander after 20 years of service. He worked for the US Department of Agriculture and later as an accountant and bartender at the Irish Times in downtown DC for many years, where he enjoyed the interesting mix of people and had a gift for making customers laugh. He had a sensitive and easy going manner. Charlie was fond of all animals but had a special place in his heart for Bassett hounds. After moving to Keyser, WV, he would often travel throughout West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio to rescue dogs. He was predeceased by his mother, Nellie Meyer, and by maternal grandparents Hardwick and Mabel Ross and paternal grandparents, Charles and Mary Elizabeth Meyer. Charlie is survived by his son Brendan Meyer of Burke, VA; his father, Charles Meyer of Glenville; brothers Robert (Christa) Meyer of Apex, NC and Eric (Melissa) Meyer of Morgantown, WV; sisters Katie Meyer and Joan Meyer, both of Albany, NY. Survivors also include nieces Morgan and Hailey Meyer of Apex, NC. The family would like to thank all of the physicians and staff of the VA Medical Centers in Albany, NY and Albuquerque, NM for the excellent care Charlie received that allowed him to enjoy a better quality of life in his final months.A Memorial service and celebration of Charlie's life will be held (November 29) at 11:00 AM at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, Glenville. A calling period will take place at the funeral home prior to the service from 10-11 AM.Memorial contributions may be made in Charles H.
