Obituary of Elva Huffmire

Elva passed away peacefully in her home on November 23, 2015. She was born in Schenectady on July 21, 1916, the daughter of William and Irene Mac Cubbin and sister of Helen Usher. Elva graduated from Nott Terrace High school and was awarded a scholarship in design to Pratt Institute. She was an avid antique collector and owned an antique shop in Russell, Massachusetts. She spent many years collecting antiques and appraising estate sales. Elva was an independent real estate broker and maintained her brokers license until the age of 98. During her decades as a broker she also rehabilitated several houses by herself. She came from a very musical family who created the Hippadrome (The "Hip") theater on Van Vranken Ave. in Schenectady. The family members played the music for the silent films. Elva enjoyed playing her piano daily until just before her passing. She was predeceased by her husband, Peter Huffmire; and son, John P. Huffmire. She is survived by her daughter, Jill (Arnold) Hyde; and step-daughter, Gail (John) Gray; grandchildren, Brittany (Tom) Lavin, Taylor (Remo) Loosli, Chad Huffmire and J.R. Huffmire; and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her niece, Linda Drake; nephew, Scott Drake; and cousin, Marilyn Schwichtenberg. Elva was always on the hunt for a special treasure and loved to have a garage sale with her niece, Eileen (Mrs. Cohen) Clark. She is also survived by several great-nieces and cousins. Elva and her family are eternally grateful to her daughter-in-law, Jill Huffmire and grandson, J.R. Huffmire, (Kansas City, KS) for taking immaculate, loving care of her son during his long illness. The family will never forget the total devotion, love and impeccable care given to Elva by her caretaker and friend, Kim Rose. Elva has left a very rich legacy filled with memories of love, acceptance, understanding, devotion and humor. There will be a private memorial service held at the convenience of the family.
