Obituary of Robert L. Fortin

Robert L. Fortin, 67, passed away peacefully at Ellis Hospital after a long illness on January 22, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Cohoes, NY, he was the son of the late Leo and Simonne (Tremblay) Fortin. Robert graduated from St. Bernard's Keveny Memorial Academy in 1966 before enlisting in the US Navy a few years later where he served as a jet mechanic on the carriers USS Saratoga and Shangri-La during the Vietnam War. Bob married Linda Galkiewicz at St. Joseph's Church, Cohoes, on July 29, 1989. He was employed by General Electric at various locales in the immediate region serving Local 128 of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union for 43 years before retiring in 2009. As a member of The American Legion Post 1450 in Halfmoon, he was President and Treasurer of the dart league for many years, as well as past President of the Adirondack Modelers Airplane Club, past Secretary of the Albany Area Bass Masters, and past President of the Sag Enibrut hunting and fishing club in Speculator. He was also a past member of the Avant Garde Drum and Bugle Corps. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Don Fortin. Survivors include his loving wife, Linda Fortin; their two sons, Daniel and Jonathan Fortin, of Burnt Hills; his brother, Francis Fortin (Alice Luther) of Crescent; and his sister, Beatrice (late Martin) Christopher of Clifton Park. He also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Catherine Fortin of Mechanicville and several nieces and nephews. A visitation period will be held Friday, Jan. 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd., Glenville. Military honors followed by inurnment will be held at the Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd., Schuylerville, NY on Friday, May 6, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. Contributions can be made in Bob's memory to the American Lung Association , Inc, 418 Broadway, 1st Floor, Albany, NY 12207.
