Obituary of John F McCarthy

John (Jack) F. McCarthy, 82, passed away at Ellis Hospital on Saturday, January 30, 2016, after a short illness. Jack was born in Brooklyn and grew up and was educated in Gloversville. He served as a Sergeant in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He was bugle captain in the Yellowjackets Drum and Bugle Corps. from Gloversville, and led the Corps. to New York State American Legion Senior Drum Corps. Championship in 1950. Jack was a graduate of St. Lawrence University and attended graduate school at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Prior to college, he worked as a lumberjack and in his father's leather business in Gloversville. For 31 years, he was employed at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, initially as a Systems Programmer, and later in various positions in Human Resources, retiring in 1993. Following retirement, he taught various personal computer courses from 1993 to 2009 in the Continuing Education Department at Burnt Hills - Ballston Lake High School. He volunteered his services for many years as an off-ice official for the Union College Men's and Women's Varsity Hockey Programs. Jack also was the founder and treasurer of the Mohawk Valley Hockey Association for 19 years, a local adult hockey program, which operated between 1972 and 2013. Survivors include Jacqueline, his wife of 58 years, whom he married on August 24, 1957. He is also survived by two sons, Terry (Paula) McCarthy of Burnt Hills and Stephen (Erin) of Niskayuna. He also has two grandchildren, Jackie (Rob) Schacht of Glenville and Derek McCarthy of Burlington, VT. Jack was predeceased by his son, Timothy; and three siblings, Audrey, Joan and Jane. There will be no services or viewing hours. Arrangements for cremation will be made by the Glenville Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack's memory to the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society, "National MS Society", P.O. Box 4527, New York, NY 10163.
