I believe I first met Debbie during a production of Secret Garden with Spotlight Players about 15 years ago. As our paths crossed time and time again she became a dear friend and mentor. I don't have the words to express how much she meant to me or to many others. She was a shining star here on Earth. I think the night sky shines a little brighter now with her light shining down on us. I will always remember her fondly and will miss her terribly.
To her family, I offer my deepest condolences, love, and hugs. While this is surely a difficult time, I hope that you are able to find some comfort in knowing how many lives she truly touched, how much she meant to so many people, and how far her legacy reaches.
"I've heard it said,
That people come into our lives
For a reason
Bringing something we must learn.
And we are led to those
Who help us most to grow if we let them.
And we help them in return.
Well, I don't know if I believe that's true
But I know I'm who I am today
Because I knew you.
Like a comet pulled from orbit
As it passes the sun,
Like a stream that meets a boulder
Halfway through the wood.
Who can say if I've been changed for the better
But because I knew you.
I have been changed for good.
It well may be
That we will never meet again
In this lifetime.
So, let me say before we part:
So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you.
You'll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart.
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have rewritten mine
By being my friend.
Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea.
Like a seed dropped by a sky bird
In a distant wood.
Who can say if I've been changed for the better
But because I knew you...
Because I knew you...
I have been changed for good."
-From the musical, "Wicked"

My prayers are with you, Debbie's friends and family, at this sad time.
I knew Debbie through our participation in plays at the Colonial Little Theatre in Johnstown, NY. She was a larger-than-life woman with a sharp wit and great acting and musical talent. In that way she reminded me of Ethel Merman; such was her stage presence. Of all the shows we did together and separately, to me one performance stands out. Debbie was cast against type as Dulcinea in The Man of La Mancha, and it turned out to be a perfect match for her talent. There were several intense scenes for her character, and I was blown away by her acting. Even though we hadn't seen each other for years, I'm sure we would have picked up where we left off years ago.
Again, I am sorry to hear of her passing.

Debbie May was an inspiration in high school. I was involved in every show, summer performances included, and I learned so much from her. I ended up getting my Bachelors in Stage Management and just directed my first elementary school musical this spring. Throughout the whole experience I thought about how Debbie ran her shows. I accepted everyone who auditioned because she always welcomed all. I ran my notes the same way she did. I kept rehearsals fun and funny because she did the same. I even created a special gift for each of my students at the end of the show, because at every cast party Debbie would do the same, going down the line to say something special about each and every one of the members of her enormous cast and crew. She has been an enormous influence in my life and she will be missed.

I hope Debbie's family can find peace knowing that she touched the lives of so many young people in such a positive way as a guidance counselor, a director, a mentor, a role model, a cheerleader, and a friend. She has influenced the whole Scotia-Glenville community with her gifts and talents. She was truly a special lady.

I met Debbie when we did theatre together at CLT. She was fun to work with and always had advice to give. You could see her love of theatre written all over her face. Those theatre days and hanging out at her ex husband's place were some of the best (and craziest) memories I have.
Blue has never been bluer
True has never been truer
Honey never tasted so sweet
There's a song in the breeze
A million voices in praise
A rose has never smelled redder
The sun has never been brighter
If I could find the right words to say
If you could look at my face
If you could just see this place
You wouldn't cry for me today

It won't be the same anymore without Debbie. Her loss will be felt by many...her spirit was so strong, and touched so many, it's like right now, things seem a little off balance. I remember once, many years ago, Debbie came to a Christmas party I gave...well since 12/25 was also her birthday, I had a birthday cake and a birthday card and present for her. She was so touched, she cried and said, no one had ever really done that for her...she was actually blown away that she had an actual birthday card, birthday cake and birthday wrapping paper...that had no mention of Christmas on it. Something that small...Debbie, you gave so much to so many....we all love you. ~~~Rena

I will always cherish Deb for her concern for the kid who was lost and providing him or her with the opportunity to shine on the stage. IMO, I think, outside of her own family, that was the aspect of her rich life that she was most proud. To some she was a little too brash, a quality which I always admired about her, but there was no denying her heart was big enough for a whole theater company. She was a great influence in my sons' lives, which made me a huge Debbie May fan. She touched so many young lives in her tenure at SGHS. Be at peace, my friend.

Theater inspires.
Our lives grow richer and deeper through the arts. Theater brings experiences that show us different thoughts and feeling. The way we look at the world changes through a lens that is wider in scope than the narrow vision we brought into the doors of the house. Theater teaches. Theater inspires. I was blessed to have teacher that showed me some wonderful lessons. And today we celebrate her life at the news of her passing. Deborah May was on the very first show I ever did, Peter Tyger's American Dream. She was cast and was featured in our photos of the most recent show I've been associated with, Taffeta Memories, which opened this weekend. So, from start to finish we've seen a lot together. I was cast as a last minute substitute in Peter's play at ACT. He was rehearsing and writing the play ( Act 2 wasn't done till three weeks before opening). So he had the luxury of writing parts for the actors already cast. And he loved writing the part of a sassy Irish immigrant for Deb. ( He was working on a sequel, American Gold, which took the main characters westward for the gold rush of '49. He had a sassy Madame of a house of ill repute based on Deb, called Virginia Ham. I can still see the image of her in that never to be completed production. )American Dream introduced me to so many wonderful friends. June Taylor Casey, Krysta Dennis, Kerry Conte, Noelle Gentile, Paula Ginder, Doug Peek, But it was Deb who gave me guidance and pointers in my first acting role as an adult. She explained the process, guided me in how to memorize. Explained how to manage the backstage anxieties.
A few years later Inwas blessed with a unique opportunity to share the stage with my sweet son Brendan Mack in one if his last roles in this area, in the Fantasticks under Deb's direction at SCP. Matt Harvey was originally cast, but couldn't do the role so I was able to slide in and share the stage with my son and Peter in a fantastic production. Our paths crossed many times socially but never again in the theater until several weeks ago when I was delighted that she was cast in Taffeta Memories, a show I am doing set and other assorted duties on. I was thrilled to be back with her. We had cone full circle, and her was Krysta , now Dr. Dennis, producing a show that we together were involved with. Alas, she dropped out of the production right after publicity photos for the surgery. But I'll always have the joy to know that at least she had these last several weeks of the joy of rehearsing and singing with the other girls in a wonderful musical review. She made not have made it to opening night, but she went out working on a production that gave her some enjoyment. I'll always remember the things she taught me on American Dream. "You're all right kid. Keep at this and you might be something". Till we meet again my dear, till we meet again.

I so wish I could be there for the memorial. Deb was a huge role model to me. She was so warm, funny and a tough cookie when she had to be. She taught me so much about being a respectful actor and human being. This world has lost such a bright light. My love and condolences go out to her entire family and to those who are as heartbroken over her passing as I am.
